She was born Dianne Emiel Goldman in San Francisco, California, to Leon Goldman, who was a surgeon, and Betty, who worked as a model. Her maternal grandparents were from Russia while her paternal grandparents were Jewish. Dianne went to Convent of the Sacred Heart High School for her studies. For her higher learning, she attended Stanford University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1955.
