Dennis Franz was born on 28 October 1944 in the small village of Maywood, Illinois. He is one of the three children born to Franz Ferdinand Schlachta and Eleanor. His father was a baker and a postal worker. His mother, too, was a postal worker. His two elder sisters are Heidi and Marlene. He received his initial education in his village, where he attended the Proviso East High School, Maywood.
While studying at this school, he was quite athletic and was very interested in swimming and baseball, among other sports. After graduating from this school in 1962, he went to Wilbur Wright College.
