Early Life, Nationality, Ethnicity, Educational Background

Kevin is the youngest of three sons born to his father, Jerald Wayne Richardson, Sr., who worked as a handyman and outdoorsman, and his mother, Ann C. Richardson, a homemaker. His nationality is American and he belongs to the white ethnic group. He is Christian. He was raised on the family farm alongside his two elder brothers, named Tim and Jerald Wayne, Jr.

He then lived in the youth camp Cathedral Domain Camp, where his father worked. He went to Estill County High School and matriculated in 1990. While in high school, he performed in various school productions, such as “Barefoot In The Park” and “Bye, Bye Birdie”. He also played football, and served as the captain of the Estill Engineers. He also played the drums in a band.

Career Beginnings

Upon matriculation, Kevin moved to Orlando, Florida and worked as a model, songwriter and dance instructor, until he eventually got a job as a performer at Walt Disney World, in charge of conducting backstage tours. Besides that, he performed such characters as Aladdin, Sebastian the Crab, Prince Eric, and one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. After finding out that his father had colon cancer Kevin moved back home – his father passed away in 1991 and Kevin went back to Florida to pursue further his career as a musician.

Backstreet Boys

In 1993, Kevin joined the boy band called ‘Backstreet Boys’, which comprised AJ McLean, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, and Kevin’s cousin Brian Littrell, whom he asked to join them.

They held their first performance at SeaWorld Orlando in May 1993. Their first single “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” was released in 1995, while the band released their self-titled debut studio album in 1996, followed the next year by their second album “Backstreet’s Back” (1997).

The band eventually achieved huge international fame with their third album, entitled “Millennium”, which was released in 1999, and spawned such Top40 singles as “Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely”, “I Want It That Way”, and “Larger Than Life”. The album became one of the best-selling albums of all time, with more than 24 million copies sold worldwide, topped the US Billboard 200 charts, and was certified diamond and 13 times platinum by RIAA.

In 2000, they released their fourth studio album – “Black & Blue” – while their next album, entitled “Never Gone” was released five years later, after a short hiatus. In 2006, Kevin decided to leave the band to pursue an acting career, but still performed with the band occasionally over the next year, until he announced his return in 2012.

They released the 2013 album “In A World Like This”, which is the band’s eighth studio album, and the follow-up “DNA” in 2019, which topped the US Billboard 200 chart. Moreover, Kevin appeared alongside other members of the band in the documentary film “Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of” (2015). During the same year, he was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame along with Brian Littrell.

Solo Career

Kevin is also known for his solo career as a musician. In 2003 he composed the soundtrack of the film “The Spirit Bear”, which was released in 2010. During the same year, he co-founded The Music Workshop alongside his friend Keith McGuffey, located in Louisville, Kentucky. Kevin started working on his solo studio album, entitled “Cover Story”, in 2012. Three years later, he released the track “She’s Got A Way”, but the album has not been released yet.

Acting Career

Kevin Scott Richardson made his debut film appearance in the 1991 comedy drama film “My Girl”, directed by Howard Zieff. He has also guest-starred in such TV series as “Sabrina The Teenage Witch”, “Arthur”, and “Fear Factor”.

In 2003, he landed the role of lawyer Billy Flynn in the Broadway production of the musical “Chicago”, after which he appeared in the MTV hidden camera reality show “Punk’d” with Ashton Kutcher. Kevin’s next role came in 2009, when he featured as Clerk in the Hallmark Channel’s drama film “Love Takes Wing”, which is based on Janette Oke’s book. Two years later, he played Adam in the short drama film “Unwound” and appeared in the drama “The Casserole Club”, which earned him the 2011 Independent Vision Award for Best Actor at Vision Fest in New York City.

In 2013, Kevin appeared alongside other members of ‘Backstreet Boys’ in the comedy film “This Is The End”, and then  landed the role of Burt in Ken Roht’s 2014 horror musical film “The Bloody Indulgent”. Kevin is the founder of “Just Within Reach (JWR)”, an environmental organization, which was established in memory of his father, and was founded in January 2001.
