Rita Moreno is born Rosa Dolores Alverio Marcano was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Her mother was Rosa Maria, and her father was Francisco Jose Alverio. Rita’s mother was a seamstress, and the father was a farmer. At a tender age, Rita’s mother moved to New York City, taking her along with her but left her younger brother Francisco behind. Rita adopted the surname of her stepfather, Edward Moreno hence the name Moreno. She lived in the villages of Valley Stream, New York, on Long Island during her teens.

Rita had a relationship with actor Marlon Brando. The relationship didn’t last long due to his infidelity. Moreno once became pregnant, and Marlon arranged an abortion for her, and when it failed, she tried to commit suicide. Rita also was romantically involved with Elvis Presley, whom they dated for a period of time but broke up due to his unwillingness to take things to another level. On 18 June 1965, she got married to cardiologist Leonard Gordon. Together they have one daughter Fernanda Luisa Fisher. Leonard Gordon later died on June 30th, 2010.

Rita began her career when she was 11 years old by voicing the translation of American movies to Spanish. In the 1950s, she landed small roles in films such as The Toast of New Orleans and Singing in the Rain, and later on, she went ahead to be featured on the cover of Life magazine.

In 1961 she landed a role in the Broadway musical West Side Story. Rita had a major role in the 1961 film Summer and Smoke.
